Introduction[]
Narconon is the name Scientology uses for a program which targets drug addicts. Although it's name is similar to the more widely known "Narcotics Anonymous", it has nothing to do with that legitimate group. Narconon has been criticized for a number of reasons:
- It has no scientific background and is based on hypotheses that go against known facts, such as:
- The impossibility to remove toxins from the body by perspiration in sauna
- The amount of vitamins, among which Niacin, that a person can take daily without risk
- The hours of sauna a person can stand daily without risk
- The success rate usually mentioned is unsubstantied by independent research and does not take into account:
- People who do not adapt to the program are dropped, sometimes without caution (e.g. left in a motel room)
- People finishing the program become scientologists and have to write a "success story" as a way out of the program
- A majority of the staff is usually ex-participants to the program that have no formal training
- There are often sanitary problems that could endanger the participants
- The exact same program is used as a "religious" one in scientology (purification rundown) and a detoxification one for 9/11 workers in New York and Iraq wars veterans
- There are tens of Internet sites aiming at leading families in trouble to Narconon, often under the false impression of independency, see http://wiki.whyweprotest.net/Narconon_centers#Narconon_web_sites.
- Claims to be independent of the Church of Scientology, when in reality money gets funneled from Narconon to the Church => Narconon funds the Church, not the other way around
For these reasons, and others, Narconon is in trouble in many countries and is banned in some (e.g. France).
