The purpose of the suit is to harass and discourage rather than win.

The law can be used very easily to harass, and enough harassment on somebody who is simply on the thin edge anyway, well knowing that he is not authorized, will generally be sufficient to cause professional decease. If possible, of course, ruin him utterly. (L. Ron Hubbard)

Scientologists accused her of things she would never do like perverted sex with her rabbi. Her relatives and neighbours got anonymous repulsive letters, she even was framed and arrested for crimes she had not done. Harassment was relentless during those 15 years.

Paulette Cooper lost most of her family in Auschwitz and after her early childhood in European orphanages was fortunately adopted and moved to the United States. This early experience of the harm tyranny causes left Paulette determined to expose tyranny in Scientology when she found out about it. She regretted that too few people spoke out against Hitler early on and decided to speak out against tyranny in Scientology despite knowing there would be a personal cost.
